Seven candles of certain colors are used in Buckland’s traditional rite. Although there are many various schools of thought on candle colors, what matters is how we practice, not how particular we are about the colors or the equipment we use. (However, feel free to disagree if you choose.)

Before working with spiritual candles, it’s customary to take a little dip in salted water to both connect with the holy element of water and to let go of any bad energy.

You should ideally have a small table in a room with good ventilation, away from children and animals. On this altar, you may choose to display a picture of a wise man or spiritual mentor who has special value for you. Or lay out whatever earthy objects you feel compelled to add.

According to Buckland, always massage from the center out to one end, then from the center out to the other. And I advise putting a little oil that makes you happy on your candles, such as bergamot, mandarin, or lemon. (Note: Before consuming undiluted essential oils if you are pregnant, see your healthcare provider.)

I always place occult candles in the traditional Buckland configuration because it makes sense to me. On the left and right backs of your surface, place two tall white altar candles. Put a candle that represents you in the middle. Place two candles to represent people you wish to impart happiness too, directly in front of and behind this candle, in a line facing perpendicular to your body.

Sit in front of your altar. Decide to let anxiety and haste go. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and fragrances in your immediate environment for a while. Keep an eye out for any nearby wildlife or other living things. Take note of your breathing. Adjust your focus and purpose.

The spiritual  candles should be lit in the following sequence when you’re ready. White candles are lit first to fill the room. The “me” candle is next. Say these words: I’m standing here. May I be content? For a few minutes, center yourself completely inside.

Now, start the occult candles on your altar that stand in for the others. They could be people or animals. (In fact, the emphasis of my most recent happy ritual was on manatees and chickens!) Imagine these entities in your head. Speak: [Name] and [Name] are standing here. I hope they’re pleased.

Last but not least, picture pure, focused happy energy filling the front left and right candles. Imagine illuminating each and imagining joy spreading to the representations of these creatures. Speak: Joy is flowing to me. [Name] and [Name] are ecstatic. Everywhere, happiness envelops all living things.

Spend a few more minutes sitting and looking at the occult candles while radiating joy from the bottom of your soul.
